Day 12 Redondela - Pontevedra Monday
06/August/2018
20 km + 300 m difference in level = 23 km effort. 5 hrs + 1 1/2 hrs pauses
At first daylight we took off - just after 7 am without breakfast - into a beautifully cool morning. Sky overcast and it remained like that all day. This was ideal walking weather and we walked very well. A first breakfast of nothing much at the first bar after almost one hour. Then another more substantial one in the bar in Arcade just before the Ponte Sampaio over the river Verdugo where Andrea and I had stopped last year. Again I got out my jacket because perspiring with the effort of walking, when I sat down I felt the cold. And finally another stop in a makeshift bar in the middle of the fields. This one too held memories for us - very hot day then, nice and cool now.
The walk today was varied, lots of ups and downs, some quite steep. Lots of different paths, Roman calçadas, roads. Only once did we have to go along a very busy Nacional which felt quite frightening, but fortunately did not last too long.
Have I mentioned the great number of people doing this walk? In Tui the Litoral branch which follows the river Minho meets the Central Portuguese. Also lots of people who want to get the Compostela (certificate) for having done 100 km start their walk in Tui. Then in Redondela those who walked the coastal camino via Vigo come in as well such that today there was a steady stream of people overtaking each other and being left behind as they were resting - Hola! Buen camiño! - and overtaking again. Not my cup of tea! If you want to avoid this you have to avoid the summer holidays which for us was not possible.
It was 1.30 pm when we arrived in the center of Pontevedra; had a bite to eat next to the N.S Peregrina church and by the time we finished it was closed! 20 min. haul to our hotel - I did not want to repeat last year’s experience staying right in the center with restaurants open till 2 am and people roaming the narrow streets until 5 am!
Have washed my clothes, had my shower, siesta followed by coffee in bed, read the newspaper and written this - it is time to go back and have a look around the old town.
