Day 8. Vila Praia de Áncora - Vila Nova de Cerveira. Thursday 2/August/2018
Day 8 Vila Praia de Áncora - Vila Nova de Cerveira Thursday 2/August/2018
21 km 6 hrs plus pauses: 30 min, 20 min, lunch 1 1/2 hrs, 10 min
Today was very hard because of the heat - 34 degrees. Left at 7:00 am to have breakfast at the padaria round the corner. Then until Caminha we stayed on the coast with the refreshing breeze we had got used to. After Caminha we followed the Rio Minho, mostly on a cycling track which has been set up along an old disused train line. Comfortable walking, but for the heat! There was some vegetation along the river, but not necessarily any shade over the track.
After our first break for icecream and drinks, Nicola asked to set up for her the hands-free trekking umbrella. That was quite a success, I think, but the heat got at her too because after all there is no air-conditioning under the umbrella.
During that time I was trundling way behind with the youngest of our group, Paulo, 10, holding my umbrella in such a way as to keep him in the shade. He must have appreciated this because when after our lunch break I asked who wanted to try the hands-free umbrella he wanted to have a go. He looked quite funny at first, like a large mushroom with legs until we lengthened the shaft(?) to allow the air to circulate above his head. And he kept it until our arrival three hours later. No need for me to hold my umbrella over him any longer which is very tiring.
Arrived in Vila Nova we all collapsed in a bar in the town center. Andrea went in search of a taxi or rather two while messages went to and fro between Andrea and Vera and Alison. Vera, my daughter-in-law, was coming to pick up her daughter Nicola and Alison, my daughter, the one with the broken elbow, was coming to join us to continue and finish our walk with us.
When I made the bookings for this adventure nothing was to be had in Vila Nova - so I booked this house in the middle of nowhere which on the map did not seem too far away. When we went there by taxi there was no end to the drive - meandering up one mountainside and down the next, and on and on.
Now Vera came from Porto by hired car - got lost, but found us in the end. Alison’s taxi did not find us, so she rang, would someone please sit outside in the road which I did. We had ordered a meal from our proprietor’s restaurant. A joyous family reunion, very noisy of course!
Everybody is in bed now since we have to take off early tomorrow because of the heat!

taxi.
On avait
